Combat Challenge:
Fire fighting requires near maximal physical and mental effort. The Combat test was designed to evaluate a fire candidate’s level of fitness. The following efforts are expected to be performed within 7 minutes or under. If a candidate does not complete all 5 tasks within the allotted time, he or she will be given one additional opportunity to successfully complete the drill. If the candidate fails to complete the challenge in the allotted time for a second attempt, they will not be considered for a spot in the volunteer recruit academy.

The tasks are described below

  1. Stair Climb with High Rise Pack
Carry a high-rise pack (2) 50 ft sections of 1 ¾ inch hose to the top of the training tower.
  2. Hose Hoist
From the top of the tower, using a hand over hand motion, pull a 5/8 inch rope to hoist a donut roll of hose (45 lbs). The evolution is complete with the donut roll clears the railing and is dropped on the floor.
  3. Forcible Entry
Using a 9 lb sledge hammer and a Keiser Machine, drive a 165 lb I-Beam 5 feet. The event concludes when the beam crosses the 5 ft mark.
  4. Hose Advance
Walk approx 100 feet, pick up a charged hose line and nozzle and move forward 50 ft, crack the nozzle, then close. Lay the nozzle on the ground.
  5. Victim Rescue
Drag a 180 lb dummy a distance of 100 ft. This event is complete when both the victim and the candidate completely clear the finish line.
